Learn More and Work on Your Plan
Recommended Activities
- Study the resource maps of your property. Using the Water Resources Section Examples as a guide, draft the water quality/riparian & fish habitat/wetlands section of your forest stewardship plan (Resource Category 3). Note any streams or wetlands, their types. Describe management considerations, protection measures, and any opportunities for habitat enhancement.
- Watch the threatened and endangered species video.
- Use the information you’ll receive from Kevin and the Special Resources and Biodiversity Section Examples (PDF) to write the protection of special resources and biodiversity (Resource Category 7) section of your plan.
- Use the Web Soil Survey to gather the information you need and draft the soils section of your plan (Resource Category 2), focusing both on the properties of your soils and also how you will protect them.
- Important: The Forest Soil Data for your Stewardship Plan publication will show you exactly how to get all of this. USE THIS PUBLICATION!
- Use the Soils Section Examples as a guide for how your soils section should look.
- Include all the items below in your plan.
- Soil series name(s) and brief description(s)
- Parent materials
- Depth and drainage
- Erosion hazard
- Compaction potential and rutting hazard
- Site index with base year
- Seedling mortality potential (and limiting factors)
- Soil protection recommendations
- Draft your management timeline (see Management Timeline Examples (PDF)). Be sure to include an entry for “review and update plan” for 10 years from now and 20 years from now.
