Riparian Management and Restoration Workshop – Fall 2024
This workshop is now full. Please join us for other education events.
A forest stream restoration in progress
Streams, wetlands, and other riparian areas provide important functions in the ecosystem as well as enjoyment to property owners. Many riparian areas have become degraded, though, by development, invasive species, and pollution. At this workshop, we will visit a small salmon stream and the wetlands and riparian forest around it. The stream and riparian area have been choked out by invasive weeds, and restoration is challenging due to the complexity of the site. We will learn from a restoration expert from the Snohomish Conservation District about the importance of riparian areas, issues with stream degradation, and strategies for restoration. We will see what the landowner has been doing and how that has already resulted in a better stream channel. Then we will discuss the remaining challenges, possible solutions, and how the concepts apply to your own riparian forest.
This event is fully outdoors and will be held rain or shine, so please wear appropriate attire. We will be traversing uneven terrain and may have to make our way through heavy brush. There will be mud and standing water, so please wear appropriate footwear.
