Start your own shiitake mushroom enterprise

Are you interested in starting your own forest grown shiitake mushroom business? Do you already sell produce at farm stands or through CSAs and want to diversify your offerings? Learn the basics of getting into the mushroom business at our forest grown shiitake mushroom production workshop!

This introductory workshop covers the basics of producing shiitake mushrooms on logs, either as an enterprise to add to your farm’s crop lineup, or as a small side business. The workshop will have a hands-on and interactive component. Each participant will get to inoculate a log during the workshop to take home afterwards. Participants will also be provided with shiitake production guidance materials being developed by WSU Extension.

Topics covered include:

  • Timber considerations: selection, cutting, and handling
  • Shiitake strain considerations
  • Inoculation procedures, equipment, logistics & labor efficiency
  • Shiitake production site considerations, and seasonal management
  • Shiitake enterprise planning considerations
  • WSU’s current research on best practices for forest-cultivated shiitake production

4:00 p.m – 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2025

Location

The workshop will be held on private forestland in Carnation, WA. Specific location information and driving directions will be sent to registrants the week leading up to the event.

Cost and Registration

Cost

The registration fee is $50 per person. Each person will receive a log to inoculate and take home.

Space is very limited! This is a small group workshop, so register early if you want a spot – this will sell out quickly.

The registration deadline is 5:00 p.m. Monday, April 21, 2025. Cancellation requests must be received before April 21, 2025 to be eligible for a refund. Humanitix processing fees are non-refundable.
